Frequently Asked Questions
We stock Sheaffer calligraphy pens with both Roman and Sanskrit nibs. All nibs come in fine (1.0 mm), medium (1.5 mm), and broad (2.0 mm) sizes. The Roman nibs are horizontal, while the Sanskrit nibs are individually cut at a 22.5° angle, making them essential for beautiful, flowing Devanagari script.
Fine nibs (1.0 mm) create delicate, narrow strokes, medium nibs (1.5 mm) give balanced lines for general calligraphy, and broad nibs (2.0 mm) produce bold, dramatic strokes for display lettering.
We recommend starting with a broad nib (2.0 mm). The broader strokes make it easier to learn proper technique and rhythm, while helping beginners see the structure of each letter more clearly. Using a broad nib also builds confidence before moving on to finer sizes.
